Part 4 - DEPENDENCE

"Give us this day our daily bread."

Give us:

  • the asking of someone who has from someone who has not

  • relying on someone else

  • dependency

Dependency: as for support; subordination to someone or something needed or greatly desired; trust; reliance; the state of being determined, influenced or controlled by something else; a compulsive or chronic need; an addiction

this day our daily bread:

  • new needs for every day

  • basic essentials for life

  • provision

The bible uses bread as a metaphor representing provision for;

  • physical nourishment (manna)

Exodus 16:4-5; Matt 14:15-21 (the feeding of 5000)

  • spiritual nourishment (Jesus is the bread of life)

John 6:51

  • What are the bare necessities of human life?

  • What are your bare essentials for happiness?

  • Are they different? Why?

What is your foundation on?

Matt 7:24-27

Foundation on rock:

1 Kings 17:8-16; Luke 19:1-10

Dependence on God is all a matter of trust.

Does everybody need to depend on God?

Luke 4:4 and Jesus answered him, saying It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Foundation on sand:

Numbers 6; Judges 14, 15 & 16

How do you depend on God?

  • admit to yourself that you need God every day for the foundation of our life

  • recognise that your daily essentials are gifts from God

  • ask Him and thank God daily for His provision

Psalms 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

What do you think God wants us to do with the extras that He gives us each day?

Are all human survival essentials the same?

Is happiness essential for human survival?

How can one person be happy with no less than $30,000.00 and others $60,000.00?
