DRESSED TO KILL

Week 7 - The Sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:1-18

The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

While God has given us everything we need to emerge victorious we need to understand the difference between authority and power.

Authority is the right to rule
"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." Matt.28:18
Power is the ability to rule
"Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." Luke 10:17

How do the enemy's weapons work?

HE WANTS TO TEMPT YOU   Genesis 3:1-6

The serpent was more subtle than any beast...

"Looks like fun."

Has God indeed said...? "Is it really so bad?"
You will not surely die. "It won't happen to me."
Your eyes will be opened. "I must be missing something."
You will be like God. "I can handle it."
The tree was good for food. "C'mon, a guy's gotta eat!"
It was pleasant to the eye. "It's too good to be wrong."
A tree desirable to make one wise. "I need this."

HE WANTS TO ACCUSE YOU   Matthew 4:1-11

Change stones to bread - Lust of the flesh: DESIRES

Jesus answered: Our needs are met by God

Jump from the temple - Lust of the eyes: DEPENDENCE

Jesus answered: Our trust is in God

Bow down and worship - Pride of life: DESTINY

Jesus answered: Our identity is found in God

HE WANTS TO DECEIVE YOU   Acts 5:1

Manipulation - Weapons of guilt: What has happened

Domination - Weapons of control: What is happening

Intimidation - Weapons of fear: What could happen

HE WANTS TO RUIN YOU   John 10:10

STEAL: your armour

KILL: the fruit of the Spirit

DESTROY: your purpose, passions and possibilities

How does the sword work in my life?   2 Tim. 3:16-17

Teaching: It tells me what is right

Rebuking: It tells me what is not right

Correcting: It tells me how to get right

Instructing: It tells me how to stay right

How do we wield the sword?   2 Cor. 10:3-5

Belief: to conquer doubt

Humility: to conquer pride

Power: to conquer weakness

Faith: to conquer fear

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom. 8:36-39
